Racing Lights by Stars of Track of Field
Too much love in you my dear,
I would sing, you would burst in tears, love.
Falling faster then oh my God,
I’ve seen inside a beating heart.
You see the stars burn out.
Racing lights, run for your life.
You scary lights won’t you shine.
For only me.
Caught me hanging on so long,
One deep breath and you’re all drown out, so
Be 17 forever with a tear in your eye.
I’ll sing you lullabies, I’ll sing you lullabies.
Won’t you shine down,
You said you could.
You knew you should
See the thoughts and breaking hearts,
And read between the lines.
I ask, If I might write to write your name in the sky,
If you want me I’m outside.
And I might like to wonder,
How you let yourself get pulled under with every breath you take.
Won’t you shine.
Won’t you shine.
Won’t you shine.

Last night while I was working on some web stuff I came across a cache of badass music mashups. Instead of sending you cheap plastic trinkets from China which are just going to end up in land fills….I figured I would spin you some rad music mashups on my newly recreated Blip.fm station so you all can have a Merry Mash-Mass!
Or just to: http://blip.fm/toddpitt
This is the first song that 30STM has released from their upcoming album “This is War” it is called “Kings and Queens” check it. This is one of the few bands I always go and see live because their shows are amazing and so is the vibe from their hardcore fans “The Mars Army.” Also, this is one of the few bands who actually uses social media the way it was intended, direct engagement with the fans, no middle man no record label required. The reason why I listen to them is not just the music, it is who they are, it is their creativity, their pension of taking an idea and manifesting it into something real, something so beautiful, and the inherent truth that lays within. Word.
Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars
Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken
We were the Kings and Queens of Promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
Into your lives
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
We were the Kings and Queens of Promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun
We were the Kings and Queens of Promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
It has been a really long physically, emotionally and mentally demanding two months for both me and my family. It’s moments like this that you are bone tired, mired and just want to sleep forever. It is times like this in life that are the reason why people sing and artists make music. So this song is exactly how I feel today…
“Eet” by Regina Spektor
It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song.
You can’t believe it; you were always singing along.
It was so easy and the words so sweet.
You can’t remember; you try to feel the beat.
Bee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
You spend half of your life trying to fall behind.
You’re using your headphones to drown out your mind.
It was so easy and the words so sweet.
You can’t remember; you try to move your feet.
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
[musical interlude]
Someone’s deciding whether or not to steal.
He opens a window just to feel the chill.
He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry
‘Cause it’s his turn, but his brother won’t let him try.

I ventured out tonight to the Hawthorne Theatre my first concert since I moved to PDX. I defiantly needed a night off to just go get lost in the music. Interestingly enough, I first heard of a little band (no so little anymore) called Lights when I was surfing through the “other/indie” music categories on MySpace, which I do from time to time if I am looking for something new, unusual, rising or random.

The opening band for lights was Stars of Track & Field, they were pretty good. I liked their stuff but did not have a chance to pick up their album, I guess the chick @ the merch table was back stage or something when I swung by between a few Widmers & Hawthorne ales.

I liked the Venue a lot, it was very chill & low key. The price of the tickets were really reasonable & a nice change from the frequently prohibitive price gouging that used to happen back in DC. The Portlanders were nice, amiable & it was a diverse mix of people. The club was split into a over 21 (in the back) / all ages up front. It was a layout I had never seen before, what can I say the joint was interesting overall.

I think of all the photos I took Lights III (above is my abso-fav). Lights was a good live show, even if it was their second time coming back through pdx they still rocked it. The band has been touring for the last year & a half, so lights confessed that she was pretty tired but still hyped up to be back in Portland. Guess this was the second to last tour date before getting back home to Toronto.
Lights played everything I wanted to hear plus they covered two great Phil Collins songs, which clearly she loved. Halfway through the show, in between songs a teen / fan from MySpace gave Lights a block of cheese. Of course, she was gracious & accepted the legendary cracker topping with a smile. Apparently there was some kind of social network cheese meme bouncing around the web the past couple months…tasty!!!
Oh yeah I almost forgot the drummer for Lights rocked!!! Honestly I was expecting a drum machine, but was delightfully surprised by an *ANIMAL* beast wailer.

When I got to meet Lights after the show, I simply told her the truth:
“I love your music, it makes me happy when I am really sad.”
She beamed & gave me a really big hug. You know most rock stars…they are normal people like everyone else. Lights has over 11 Million profile views on MySpace for a reason, good stuff, positive, beautiful voice, emotive, original sound. My daughter Immi loves Lights like crazy & always wants us to play the album over & over again.
Todd’s top recommend tracks off of “The Listening” are:
This well done video mashup is the two movies V for Vendetta + Phantom of the Opera & the award winning 30 Seconds To Mars song “The Kill” all wrapped up into one. Good concept, good execution.
This is one of the best music & video mashups I have found floating around online in a long while. It is pretty stylized and the resulting video is different, somehow more then just the sum of the parts. It flows pretty consistently considering how different the source materials are, yet pulls from similar themes (darkness, the masks, duality, duplicity, etc). It is very original in both the content selection & the specific scene cuts which are used. Hats off to mergirl1 for this piece of creative mash.
